Today In Woodstock History: Woodstock 1994 Comes To An End

Featured , Misc , Woodstock Music 1 Comment »

The final day of Woodstock 94 was a dry one, but the mud people had already taken over. The day started with a little Sunday gospel courtesy of The Sisters Of Gospel. The festival rocked old-school with Santana, The Allman Brothers Band, Traffic and Jimmy Cliff. The biggest bands of the mid-‘90s also performed including a light-bulb wearing Red Hot Chili Peppers and a mud-slinging Green Day. And 25 years after taking a pass at performing as part of Woodstock 1969, Bob Dylan delivered an incredible set, marking yet another miraculous comeback on the stage in Saugerties. The night, and the festival, ended under candlelight with Peter Gabriel performing Biko, a song of courage and hope. The year was 1994, 350,00 people gathered in the name of peace and music, and the spirit of Woodstock had endured.

Woodstock 1994

After a bonus day of music on Friday and an all-night rave, the crowd at Woodstock 94 was ready for high noon on Saturday. 25 years after taking the stage at Woodstock as a relatively unknown artist in the Unites States, Joe Cocker was given the duties of bridging the gap and bringing the spirit to the anniversary of the greatest festival of all time. Woodstock 94 definitely paid tribute to the now classic rock icons on Saturday with CSN and The Band, but this was not your father’s Woodstock. Cypress Hill and Salt N Pepa brought the hip hop flavor, The Cranberries and Melissa Etheridge rocked, Aerosmith, Henry Rollins and Metallica REALLY rocked and Nine Inch Nails got very dirty, joining the growing number of Mud People. Rain, mud, music and no regrets…Saturday channeled the Woodstock vibe like no one thought possible. You might have drank a Pepsi or two at Woodstock 94, but that did not take away from an unforgettable 14 hours of peace & music! Share your soggy stories from the farm right here at Woodstock.com.

Hot Tuna Returns to the New York Metropolitan Area

Featured , Misc , Tickets , Woodstock Music No Comments »

Woodstock legends Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady have been friends and musical partners since the early sixties and have played and recorded some of the best and most memorable American blues and roots music.  Formed while they were still lead guitarist and bassist of the Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna began as an acoustic band and has morphed into masterful group captivating music lovers the world over.

Hot Tuna will return TONIGHT and TOMORROW to the New York Metropolitan area.  Their electric performance will feature an all-star lineup including veteran guitarist G.E Smith, brilliant mandolin virtuoso Barry Mitterhoff and special guest drummer Skoota Warner.  Smith has played with David Bowie, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Lou Reed and he’s toured with Bob Dylan. Mitterhoff  has been a friend since his work on Jorma's 2002 Grammy nominated CD, Blue Country Heart and can be heard on the film soundtrack O Brother Where Art Thou. Warner, known as “The Funky Drummer,” has performed with the likes of Santana, Matisyahu, Mary J. Blige and Lionel Ritchie and has a reputation as one of the best soul, rock, gospel & pop drummers around.

Singer-songwriter Steve Earle will kick off the evening with his heartfelt rock and country troubadour tunes. Having just won the award for Best Contemporary Folk Album at the 2010 Grammys for his CD, Townes, Earle is considered one of the foremost folk musician’s around. His experimental style ranges from rockabilly to just plain rock and Hot Tuna is honored to tour together this summer.

Hot Tuna continues to play and collaborate not only because they have the ability, but also the drive to push themselves as musicians, creating new material from the soul. In fact, the band will spend 2010 recording new material for an upcoming album.  Fans can also look forward to Jack’s  new album, Dream Factor, set for release June 17th (Eagle Records) that features brand new songs and an impressive cast of collaborators. Joined by Paul Barrare, Ivan Neville, Jorma Kaukonen, Warren Haynes and Doyle Bramhall II among others, Jack showcases his signature sound in a variety of settings, traveling through blues, rock, country, folk, funk, R&B and soul influences on the disc's 11 tracks.
